Sometimes criminal lawyers have to deal with several cases at the same time, for instance when cases go to court on the same date. This is what happened to four clients of lawyer Xavier Cormier who all pleaded guilty to shoplifting charges on the same day in unrelated cases. For various reasons covered by the Criminal Code and jurisprudence, these clients received discharges in order to avoid having criminal records.
Since the criminal lawyer in charge of the cases was dealing with a court case in another room, a partner of the firm negotiated with the Prosecutors who were responsible for the different cases and then pleaded before the Judge. Finally, each client received an absolute or conditional discharge. Some of these clients had to make charity donations, while others had to do community work. An unusual thing was that one of the clients had already received a discharge in the past, but still benefited once again from this measure.
Sometimes Mr Xavier Cormier’s clients receive a sentence other than a discharge. See notice.
